I grew up in countryside and material things were not essential for us as long as there was enough good food on the table and warm clothes for the colder days. Moving to California for college, working and starting a family here, now I have found myself too materialistic. My seven year-old wants literally everything in the store. I heard and felt all the desires for the material things.
I remembered how I crunched numbers when grocery shopping in graduate school time. I seem to feel the same pinch now. According to Tom Abate (see the article on the right side), I am not the only one. There are actually plenty out there.
Therefore, I have made up my mind to use this recession as an opportunity to splurge and save more (maybe gradually, not too much for now).
So, “Recycle, Re-use and Compost” is my motto.
I cut some branches from the color tree to make a wreath by only using some new ribbons. I went through the crowded storage room and splurged. This is what I do now before the holiday shopping. I collected enough clothes and things to donate. And the storage room looks much bearable.
When I have to buy presents, I shop at stores that are contributing their profits to charity organization and/or good causes.
What else can I do? Oh, starting compost… Instead of purchasing fertilizer, using homemade compost for my gardening is a lovely idea. And it is part of growing organic garden as well.
So what are your ideas?
